Poor Yao

Wow, the time has come to seriously wonder whether the big guy can stay healthy, or whether he will join the ranks of many a promising big man, whose odd physiques are the sources of their abilities and their downfalls. Let's hope that Yao can come back like Big Z and not have the sort of abbreviated career of talents like Ralph Sampson and Bill Walton.

Looking more short term, does this solve the Western stockpile? I've been working on a post in my mind to say that the Suns could find themselves on the outside of the scrum, but now it looks like the Rockets might slip. Or will T-Mac and the rest of the Rockets step up?

  • The Rockets won last night, but I don't know if that'll work long for the playoffs, or even to get in now, since there are still good teams on the outside looking in. Seems like the Rockets are always behind the 8ball making up for one of their lost stars.

As for Yao's build, when I saw him a few weeks ago I was struck by how awkwardly he runs up and down the court. It's like Frankenstein mixed with Igor -- height and square head mixed with a shuffling limp. I wondered at the time if it was sustainable for an entire career, like an engine with a misfiring cylinder that would just wear out the rest faster. Did he always run so weird before the leg break last year?

  • I feel for Yao. The pressure on him to play this summer will be immense. Playing on partly hobbled wheel won't help Yao's long term prospects.
