Pau-Wow

If the Lakers have managed the sixth-best record in the West without Pau Gasol, how far will they go with him?

And on another subject, why isn't Chris Paul getting more ink in the all the MVP talk this midseason? Point guard for the top team in the West, and on pace to become the first player in 15 years to average 20 points and 10 assists?

(P.S. NBA.com has some fugly pictures of Pau. Check out the gallery on his player page.)

  • Agreed.
Chris Paul for MVP! It must be cause no one one New Orleans goes to games.

Now that they're tops in the west though, they're hard to ignore. (although since they got there, they've gone 0-2 and Phoenix is probably back on top...)

  • I am also in the CP34MVP camp.

As for Mr. Gasol: Here is the test of his overall game. I had been hoping for Pau to Boston prior to this summer's shake up, and was always surprised to find fellow Boston fans thinking Pau was just another Euro-wimp.

With Kobe, Pau, Bynum and Odom the Lakers now have the clearance to run the interference.

As for the possible return of a Boston-LA Championship rivalry: When we last left this plot, Kobe and Shaq had just won three straight and LA was nipping at Boston's heals for most Rings ever. Monkeyshoes and I were bummin, with our hopes pinned on Antoine hitting threes and Tony Battie guarding the Daddy.

Obviously, lots done changed since then. Needless to say, I would love to see KG restore Boston to greatness on the Staples Center floor.

  • Some excellent posts and comments lately everyone! Made while I have been considering first principle issues relating to sports fandom, in the wake of the Packer loss to the Giants two weeks ago. Maybe I'll emerge from my cocoon to say that I, too, think CP3 deserves serious consideration for MVP. I hate to say, though, that I think when all is said and done, Kobe beef will end up the MVP this year. What a crap sandwich the Griz took back for one of the better bigs in the game. Great move for the Lake Show, I don't even think they'll miss the draft picks much. I still don't see them winning the title, but it's serious business out there now.

  • And a nod to you, old Ironwood...in my haste to discuss a rebirth of the Laker/Celtics rivalry -- I completely neglected to mention the Pistons, who will be right there as well.

Sorry, I didn't really watch basketball when that was all going down...but now it's a mirror image of the past.

The West is still more than the Lake show, so we'll see who has what it takes. The Spurs machine will turn it on, and who knows, maybe the Hornets will emerge even more in the playoffs, just like Eli. Sorry Pats fans. I was pulling for you.

  • Amazing part about that deal for Lakers is the age of their top 3. Kobe isn't 30 yet. Pau is 27 and Bynum can't even buy a beer. It's not a mortgage the future for this year only type of deal.
