Reader Response: Bosh, Amare, Howard or Oden?

Somewhere recently on the web, the discussion turned to a very interesting question: If you were going to build a franchise around a young center, who would you pick among

Chris Bosh, 22 years old

Amare, 24 years old

Dwight Howard, 21 years old

Greg Oden, 19 years old

So, what do yall think?

  • Man, I'd forgotten how young Bosh is. 22? that's nuts.

I guess I'd still go w/Howard, though, even though there is a chance he'll never get the offensive skills to go with his sick athleticism. I'd rank 'em:

    -Howard
    -Bosh
-Amare (If he's healthy for the next 10 years, this will be one of those posts you hope the Internets devour)
-Oden (has to do it first)

  • Oden. In Norse mythology, Oden is related to "excitation," "fury" or "poetry." and is known as the "bringer of victory." I like his crazy beard, and the last time I heard media sports pundits going this ga-ga over a young player it was LeBron.

  • I have to go with mewolves on this one (good to see you are alive and well, jason--how are the t-wolves boards these days?).

A great conundrum, though, and how exciting is it that the league is coming up with so many young bigs?

  • That's got to be one of the hardest questions anyone could face in the league right now. And, it shows how much the league has changed in the last couple years -- seems like rumors of the death of the big man have been greatly exagerated.

Just to be different, I think I'd take Amare... what he did in the playoffs the year before he got hurt was sick. He looks like he can get back to that level. Howard second then Bosh.

Would you trade the chance (albeit remote) to draft Oden for what we know about Eddy Curry? I guess only the ping pong balls will tell.

  • I think I'd go with D-How, for his rebounding and defense --- although it's a toss-up with Amare, knees and all. Maybe it's skewed by playing with Nash & Co., but it seems like Amare can take over a game, any game, at either end of the floor in a way that few others can. Basically, you can't go wrong with any of the three.

No disrespect, but Oden doesn't really belong in the conversation. I'm sure it'll be a different story a year or two from now --- but if you're talking about building an NBA team, how can you take someone who's never played a game in the league, when you've got three guys sitting right there who are proven NBA All-Stars. If you put Oden up against other not-yet-established big men (your Bynums, Aldridges, Darkos, etc. etc.), yeah, I'll take my chances with Oden.

Keep this in mind: Yao and Pau are not yet 27; Emeka is 24 (check out his blocks and rebounds); Al-Jeff a mere 22. Throw in Booze-Hound and Zebo (both 20-10 guys this year), and you've got about as deep a lineup of Young Bigs as we've seen in years. Hell, Jermaine's not even 30.

  • My rank is Amare, Howard, Oden, Bosh. . . and I am tempted to put Oden higher.

Sure, he has not done anyting yet as a pro. And sure his offense has looked rocky as he recovers from a friggin broken wrist. But his defensive presense alone shows me that he will be a dominant force in the League.

You know, with all these bigs, I am reminded of that original piece on the young power forwards I did pre-Outside Shot comparing Duncan, KG, Sheed, CWebb, McDyess, Dirk, Marion, Van Horn, Antoine, Kemp, Malone, Abdur Rahim, Lorenzen Wright, and several others. . . maybe I will stack these new young bigs up stats wise, and we can get a bit deeper on this subject

  • p.s. I would trade 10 Eddy Curry's for Oden.
