Everybody Goes Home Bummed

Sorry all, when the dust settles and the smoke clears this year, no regular reader of this space will be happy.

The Wolves? Home. The Knicks? Home. Arguably there's been some progress in each situation, but neither will be serious any time soon.

Philly? Out in the first round.

The Bulls? Could knock off the Magic, but even then will get quickly bounced in Round 2 Will feel the Celtics wrath and get bounced early.

Detroit? Oh my goodness, how quickly the mighty can fall. My overall disappointment was made worse by the stylistic drop off. Adding the Answer and subtracting the Butler made them much less of a team and far harder to watch. I basically haven't tuned in to them in months. They aren't even an appetizer for the Cavs, more like an amuse bouche. How depressing.

The Blazers? Very impressive season, but the Lakers will run 'em out if someone else doesn't get them earlier in the wacky west.

The Celtics? I agree slightly with Weedie, that people are writing them off a bit too soon but I still say the Cavs take them out and with relative ease--LeBron is on a mission and his team is better than last year, when they pushed the C's to the limit. And the Celtics are worse. Even if they get something from Steph, KG hasn't been right for months. Yes, he'll return, but he won't be the KG of last year and his effectiveness may be very limited. Big Baby and Powe will do well in spurts but aren't ready to play with the consistency required of a champion. Sorry, but not really.

The Cavs? Does anyone reading this root for them? Jason, if KG can't go, will you return to your old allegiances and throw in with the Cavs bandwagon? They'll get to the finals but sadly, there they'll run into...

The Lakers. I hate writing this, but they are the class of the West and they match up very well against the Cavs. Come June, we'll have to stomach the fact that Kobe will join a different stratosphere of champions. And Phil will surpass Red as the all-time championship king, making it extra-bitter in Beantown.

  • Fuck Kobe.

I'll keep pulling on Obama's hopium. When the smoke clears, LaBron will leave Bryant wishing he still had Shaq in the middle.

Did you see that Florida International University hired Isiah Thomas? I wonder how that Knick-style front office sex talk will play with the co-eds.

  • I agree about Kobe, but have to call 'em as I see 'em.

As for Zeke, wow, what an odd new chapter. He did give up his first year's salary when he heard about budget cuts at the university, which I thought was pretty classy. The fact that he's still pulling down gazillions from the Knicks makes it a lot easier.

  • Look, I would love the Celtics to win it all, and will be "bummed" if they lose. But the deep, decades-long suckiness that is the Celt's recent history is still fresh in mind. Truly, I am so friggin happy that the League's greatest franchise has fought its way back to the top that lots of bad shit would have to go down before I would be feeling down for any prolonged period.

Especially since Kobe is winning nothing.

Exhibit A: The Lakers remain super soft inside. Hey, the put up big rebound and points in the paint stats in their wins. Great front runners. In their losses, the same weak play that gave up that huge lead to Boston in the Finals was on full display. Bynum, as good as he is, adds zero grit.

Exhibit A(1): The Lakers know they are weak. Why else are they starting former Spartan Shannon Brown in the back up point guard slot? Dude is not a p.g. But the falshy-but-fluffy style that is Jordan Farmar wasn't cutting it. So Phil went to a D-League two-guard. To help with toughness. LA is fucked.

Exihibit B: What we have all been waiting for! Kobe is finally showing signs of age. I went to that Blazers-LA tit last week, and for the first and only time I can remember, Kobe played tired down the stretch. The Kobster played in all 82 this season, raising his career regular season totals to 948. Throw in another 200 or so Playoff games, and NBA crown prince dickhead is all of the sudden got some serious wear and tear on his tires.

    Keep hope HP.

Finally, Ironwood, I am not being a homer about the Blazers being capable of knocking them out. The Playoffs are often about matchups. That Seattle team that was upset by Denver in 94 would have beaten most of the other teams in the West. Portland plays LA real tough, and the degree to which the Blazers are peaking is sort of amazing.

We shall see what happens. Cause on the subject of match ups, Houston gives Portland serious trouble. The intrigue.

  • Hooray hooray
    We won today
    The pre-lotto 5th pick
    Came the Wolves way

    We moved up on Memphis
    Through random drawing
    After a year of being
    The fat kid see-sawing

    While others will
    be having playoffs
    Our team's had
    a round of layoffs

    This tie-break finally
    gives us hope
    It's the baby powder
    In a junkie's dope

    Moving up one spot
    Can bring extra joy
    Like the extra million
    For Randy Foye

    For now we're outside
    Looking in
    But at least this town
    Produced Craig Finn

    Don't think I have
    Stopped believin'
    When I call the playoffs
    For Mr. Cleveland
