Starbury in Beantown?

How do the partisans feel about this story? I welcome it myself. :)

  • I think Marbury's impact will be huge. What says 'big game player' better than a tatoo on your head?

  • I actually can't believe this will happen. With how dominant the Celtics have been this year, I think it makes more sense to roll the dice with what you have, rather than take a flyer on Steph. That's why I hope they do it--the C's are so tough, they may need to be corroded from the inside.

  • He was in the stands at the Wolves game last night -- watching Telfair, reportedly, although I had recently heard a rumour that he would be shipped here for Telfair and McCants somehow. Barf.

On the broadcast, he stated how fun it was to be here, and how he always likes to be back here playing against the Wolves. He said, "I know those boos were really cheers. I have a lot of fans here." He also wore a stocking cap covering his tat. Dumbass.

  • 'Those boos were really cheers' is the new CGreen slogan

  • To be more specific, I do not think Marbury would help the Celts because he is a less efficient ball hog than Sammy Cassell. . . and Sammy Cassell only helped the Celts marginally. The Celtics are a defensive team. Marbury has never shown interest in D. Bad match.

As to the question, do the C's need some veteran punch off the bench, I am not sure. Until the 1-3 road trip, I was content to dismiss the arguments that having not replaced either Posey's long ball or PJ's length would hurt Boston. While both the Lakers and Blazers games made me yearn for PJ in particular, I still say we have the crew to repeat.

In all three loses, the Celtics lost control of the game when the bench was on the floor in the 3rd and 4th quarters. All season, Doc has been content to stick with the rotation, regardless of score or opponent. In the short term, this means losing some games you could win. In April, May and June, it means fresh bodies.

    Check these minutes per game:

    Paul Pierce 36.3 min (36th)
    Ray Allen 35.7 (42nd)
    Kevin Garnett 32.7 (76th)

This is roughly the min per game these three played last year. For KG especially, who averaged over 38 minutes per game for 11 years with the Wolves, the ability to compete for the best record and rest is a magic formula.

  • Quoting The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac:

"The greatest American tragedy of the individual is not River Phoenix, nor Len Bias, nor Duane Allman, nor any of a parade of coked-up teenage strumpets depositing their talents at the rehab clinic gates. That distinction goes to Stephon Marbury, the lone cub slowly losing his mental faculties as a result of the scars the NBA bestows on young, unequipped individuals.

"Marbury has endured the most awkward career of his generation and emerged with the status of the league's lone 'star' journeyman. Contaminating everything that he touches, he has been tossed from team to team---hindering squads on the rise, diminishing the status of near-contenders, and destroying teams' dreams at the apex of hope."

(This is an awesome book, as Pete mentioned in a previous post.)

Personally, I don't think even Marbury has the ability to destroy the hopes of the Celtics. If it's not working out, Ainge will cut his ass faster than Steph can chuck up an ill-advised three. Seems worth a roll of the dice. If he's not totally bonkers, Steph still has the explosiveness to contribute as much, on any given night, as Posey or Cassell did. But that's a pretty big "if."
