On the Basketball Jones

If you haven't watched the Basketball Jones, do yourself a favor and check it out. It's two guys from Toronto who used to do an audio podcast, and this year they upgraded to video. The hosts Skeets and Tas reminded me at first of Bob and Doug McKenzie from Strange Brew -- but talking hoops instead of beer and back bacon. Anyway, they're doing it every day, and it's usually informative and funny as hell.

I always thought it would be cool if they had a decent shirt that said "Basketball Jones" so we could give it to commissioner Jenny. Ironwood told me he was thinking the same thing. Turns out they were having a T-shirt contest last week and JLX told me to make something, so I did. They won't be turning them into shirts, but they put it on the show!

Anyway, here is my brief hit on Friday's show. Skeets says the design is a like the evil eye of Sauron, which was the same unfortunate thought I had when I finished it. The news is a little old now, but it's still a good excuse to tell you about the Jones.

Be sure and check out this week's shows at TheBasketballJones.net. And if you have one of those nifty iPod things, they have video or audio feeds for your ongoing consumption. After a hard night of watching the Wolves, it totally makes my commute worthwhile and renews my hope in the NBA. Just a little tip from yer pal, TV-on-the-internet-Dave.

  • This whole thing makes me very happy, especially TVDave's design getting a little play. Nice work!

The other very funny thing about the video is how much Taz looks like our very own Abe. Who knew? You all should check it out for that reason alone.

I had been a pretty big TBJ fan until this year and the move to the video format. I listen to it on the way to and from work, so the video piece adds nothing for me and takes away a bit. The episode here is a good case in point--the audio feed of them looking at and showing t-shirt designs just doesn't work as well, although most of the show still does.

Dave, you could and should write them email--your stuff is so funny they would definitely read it and have a good time with it.

So, to conclude, hooray all around.

  • The switch to video threw me too, even though I watch other video podcasts. It took them a while to get the iTunes podcasting down, plus it's hard to watch while biking/cooking/driving, etc. But I think the video has allowed them to expand and make the show better. Their news items have pics from the previous night's action, and some sight gags that are pretty hilarious. Then once they settle into discussions, you can usually just listen from there and spend the rest of the time licking the bus window like me.

The video format does work well for the ocassional segment too -- like when Tas lost a bet and had to wear a Vince Carter jersey to a Raps game, which led to much bleeping-out and scorn being heaped upon him.

Which reminds me, they also cuss less this season...which leads me to believe they're probably getting paid finally, which they absolutely should. Again, hooray all around!
